Ariel Paper Lantern

Ooo, I’m just so excited for this one! It’s Disney, it’s die cut, it’s the newest addition in my paper lantern collection. Everyone, give a warm welcome to The Little Mermaid herself, starring in my lovely, new Ariel paper lantern design!

Be sure to check out my other Disney paper lantern designs in this series!

This design posed a lot of challenges for me, and, because of that, these lanterns will definitely hold a special place in my heart. I wanted the main scene to be above the water, but also wanted to depict a below-water scene while keeping the flow of the overall design. There are actually a few different iconic Ariel scenes, but I went with the one of her on the rock—looking at the shore. I couldn’t fined a way to fit Prince Eric in, but we can assume he is somewhere in the castle: gazing in her direction too (so romantic).

To learn how to assemble my paper lanterns, see this tutorial.

I use a Cricut Explore to do my die cut designs, and I absolutely love it! For tips on creating this delicate paper cut, see the FAQ section on my website.

It took me quite a while to figure out how I was going to depict the top of the water while still making Ariel and the castle stand out. Once I came up with a style, it ended up being really fun to add the choppy waves, and that ended up being my very favorite part of the whole design!

I swear, every time I design one of these, I think to myself, “Wow, that’s the most intricate design I’ve ever created.” I’m not sure if these really are increasing in intricacy, or if I just forget how much detail went into the past designs.

Ariel Paper Lantern

I hope you enjoy my new Ariel paper lantern as much as I do! I love the challenge of making these designs, and I’m happy to have awesome readers like you to share them with. Any suggestions for who my next lantern design should feature?

I would love to see the plant “audrey 2 ” from little shop of horrors; could just be I am currently IN the production, but it is by far one of my favorite musicals!

All of your lanterns are beautiful! Amazing, creative designs! I would love to see Belle, with the Beast, Lumere, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and the rose. I’m sure you could make it just as pretty as your others, All in due time. Can’t wait. I do love Ariel. Each side of your lantern is beautiful. Thanks for taking the time to make these. I could see using them at a wedding reception or as centerpieces for a party.

Ooo yes, I can see it now! Each side could be shaped like the casing holding the rose—how pretty would that be!? And any of these would definitely make a great centerpiece. These ones would go well with a nautical theme, don’t you think? Thanks for your support. So glad my designs can make other people happy! ^_^

What about Frozen with Elsa and Anna and maybe Sven. Then of course there’s Aladdin an Jasmine, the 7 Dwarfs of course could add Snow White. Lion King, Pocahontas and ……..
What ever you do will be beautiful and great. Congratulations on the new baby. Hope you post when you know the sex.

Oh yes, I definitely need to do a Frozen one, don’t I! Making all seven dwarves would be a fun challenge too. I actually have done an Aladdin and Jasmine one:

      Hi Nana,

I’ll have to provide some instructions and pictures for assembly next time I create one of these. Basically, what you do is print out the design, then cut it out following the lines. After that, you cut out your vellum lining to fit, and glue it on the interior of the lantern. Finally, you can fold the tabs, the bottom panel, and each of the four sides, then glue the tabs inside. There’s no folding lines in the template, but if you line up the seashells on the top, it works perfectly.

Sorry for not including pictures! Hope that helps. 🙂

What size paper do you use? I feel as if I’m over thinking this but I want to make sure before I cut with my Cricut! Thanks

I make my lanterns out of one sheet 8.5″x11″ card stock. You could use bigger paper if you would like your lanterns to be larger. I wouldn’t go much smaller than that, though, because some of the details might be too hard for the Cricut to pick up. 🙂

Your lanterns are beautiful! I plan on doing all of these for my daughters room! I was just wondering, do you use the card stock setting on your Cricut or the intricate cuts setting?

Also another vote for a Frozen lantern 🙂 Lion King would be fun too, my son would love it!

Thank you Brittany! I’m so glad you like them. They will look lovely in your daughter’s room, I’m sure! ^_^

It depends on the thickness of my card stock, but I usually use either the regular “cardstock” setting or the “light cardstock+” setting. I didn’t know there was an intricate cuts setting—you may have just opened up a world of possibilities to me! 😀

Also, since posting this, I actually did create a Frozen paper lantern design! Feel free to check it out:

    Hello Miss Mandee,
I just tried to cut the beauty and the beast one, and it totally shredded the rose and the chandeliere. I’m wondering if i’m doing something wrong? i used 12×12 paper but it still did it for a 8×11 paper, I used a thin cardstock. i really like these lanterns and would like to decorate my daughters room in them. Please Help Me!!
    Thank You!

      Hi Shawni,

Sorry you are having trouble. These lanterns are quite delicate, and it can take some tweaking to get it the way you’d like. I’ll do my best to address both of your concerns:

      1. All of my lanterns are set up for 8.5×11 inch paper, but you can make them larger on 12×12 inch paper too. You will just need to increase the size of the design while you are in Cricut Design Space before you send it to cut. (Simply use your mouse to select one of the corners of the design and drag it to your desired size).

      2. If you are using a lighter weight cardstock, I would suggest a couple things: (1) make sure you have your machine set to either “Light Cardstock” or “Light Carstock+,” and (2) either use an older, less sticky cutting mat or a LightGrip Mat.

And always be sure to peel the design off slowly and carefully!

      Hope that helps,

      Mandee

Alice in Wonderland is definitely a frequent request! And, while I don’t make any promises on exactly when it will be done, I can tell you that I do have something in the works; so, stay tuned! 😉

Hi There! The download includes an SVG file for cutting machines as well as a pdf (printable) file. If you need the file as a png, you can open up the pdf version in Adobe Reader and go to File>Export To>Image>PNG. Hope that helps!

Your lanterns are beautiful! I was wondering if you have ever tried making them in a more permanent material like the wood veneer or balsam wood that they sell for the maker. I’d love to hear your thoughts on trying that!

Thanks! I haven’t tried these designs with wood only because I am not a fan of the wood that can be used with a Cricut machine. But if I had a laser cutter, I would definitely give it a shot!
