“Dead men tell no tales.” Well, if that phrase doesn’t give away the theme of today’s freebie, I don’t know what will. If you’re a fan of pirates, plunder, and, of course, Johnny Depp, this design is definitely for you! Get ready to set sail for Tortuga, because my Pirates of the Caribbean paper lantern is here.

When thinking of possible Disney lantern themes, Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t one of the first ones to come to mind; but, when my husband, and a few other readers, suggested it, I just knew I had to make it happen! I wanted this design to be based mostly on the movie, but also be reminiscent of the classic ride: that’s why I made sure to include the scene with the jailed pirates trying to lure the dog with the key. While this event did occur in the movie, it definitely reminds me more of the Disneyland ride.
Speaking of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, did you hear about how Johnny Depp surprised guests by appearing in full costume and interacting with them as they passed by last week? Can you imagine!? The funny thing is: two years ago from last week, we were in Disney World, and one year ago from last week we were in Disneyland. So, I told my husband, if we had continued the trend, we could have potentially seen Johnny Depp on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride! Maybe next April…

Like most all my paper lanterns, removing the final design from your cutting mat is as much of an art as the cut itself. With this one, make sure to take particular care with the panel depicting the piece of eight coin—the design gets pretty intricate there.
Have fun creating this swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean paper lantern! Yo ho, you ho…you know the rest.
