Today’s design could be described as Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious! That’s right—it’s a brand new installment in my Disney Paper Lantern series that’s practically perfect in every way. Prepare yourself for fun-filled adventure involving chimney sweeps, carousel horse races, and kite flying in my Mary Poppins paper lantern.
As I continue to expand my Disney Paper Lantern series, the new requests I get have, understandably, decreased. But, even with many of the “main” Disney films covered in my collection, there has been one design that I have had numerous requests for—Mary Poppins!
Have you seen the trailer for Mary Poppins Returns yet? It looks quite magical, and they seem to be staying true to most of the original set design from the first movie. I also think it’s fun that Dick Van Dyke has a part in the film!
I always love seeing how these lanterns turn out! It’s amazing how different they tend to be from the initial sketches I do. When I showed this one to my husband he said, “Wow! This is your best one yet.” He says that every time though. When I mentioned that to him, he simply responded, “Well, you just keep getting better and better.”
Who knows if that’s really the case, but hopefully if he likes them, then you all do as well!
To learn how to assemble my paper lanterns, see this tutorial.
I use a Cricut Explore to do my die cut designs, and I absolutely love it! For tips on creating this delicate paper cut, see the FAQ section on my website.
Like most all my paper lanterns, removing the final design from your cutting mat is as much of an art as the cut itself, so be sure to go slowly—especially when it comes to those little details across the top.
Enjoy putting my Mary Poppins paper lantern together! What plans do you have for this unique, new design?

January 24, 2019 at 4:12 pm (5 years ago)Mandee, This is stunning, when adding it to my uploads on the Cricut design space it looks fine, but when I insert there is a error on the Mary Poppins side. Any thoughts?

January 25, 2019 at 8:21 am (5 years ago)Hi Lauren! I’m not really sure what the issue might be, I’m sorry! :/

February 2, 2019 at 3:49 pm (5 years ago)No problem. We were able to get it to work. Our wedding is at a zoo and we are doing a little bit of a Mary Poppins theme and thought these would be perfect. Any suggestions on good sturdy brands of card-stock? Where you do get your vellum?
Abigail
March 26, 2019 at 9:58 pm (5 years ago)I am having the same problem! The Mary Poppins side has half of Mary gone! How did you fix it!?
Mandee
March 27, 2019 at 8:12 am (5 years ago)Hi Abigail! For some reason, when uploaded to Design Space, it blacks out that side, but run it through anyway—the cut lines are there, you just can’t see them. I don’t know why Design Space is doing this (I think it might be a glitch in a recent update), but give the cut a try—it should still cut like it’s suppose to. 🙂

March 27, 2019 at 8:15 am (5 years ago)Oh good! I use the Recollections brand cardstock from Michaels, but I sometimes buy it on Amazon depending on the color I need. And I usually get my vellum in that same brand. Good luck with your wedding!! 🙂

April 30, 2020 at 11:03 am (4 years ago)So glad I learned of your work through Jennifer Maker’s website. In attempting to do the lanterns, I wondered if there was a way to add scoring lines where the lantern is to be folded. I really messed up some of the intricate design in trying to fold it. Thanks!!
Mandee
May 1, 2020 at 10:09 am (4 years ago)Thanks Lisa! I’m glad you found my little corner of the internet!!
Unfortunately, I didn’t originally include score lines in my paper lantern designs. But, you can add them in through Cricut Design Space if you’d like, or follow along with this video to see where the folds go. Or, if you’re up for it, you could use a scoring tool and ruler to do it by hand. 🙂

October 23, 2020 at 1:02 pm (3 years ago)I love these designs! I am trying to make Mary Poppins for a friend. When I upload the svg to Cricut Design Space it looks fine, but when I insert it into the project, the panel with Mary Poppins has her just fine from the arms down, but the contour that defines the top of her arms, her shoulders, head, and the umbrella is missing so it’s a solid block. I can send you a screen shot if this doesn’t make sense. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? I have tried deleting the svg and re-uploading it, but it’s the same! Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

October 23, 2020 at 1:18 pm (3 years ago)Regarding the Mary Poppins svg problem described above, I looked at the Contours, and I can see that piece. It looks different from the other contours, though. The interior of the shape is white, instead of gray like all the other contours, like maybe it’s set as a Draw or something other than a Cut line. It will not let me change it!

March 15, 2021 at 11:33 pm (3 years ago)Hi can you help with this problem too? I tried uploading it twice and it still doesn’t look right on the canvas but looks ok in the upload. Do you think it will cut okay? I am in love with the lanterns!

March 16, 2021 at 8:51 am (3 years ago)I know it looks strange. I’ve never figured out why this one has a glitch when uploaded to Design Space. But it cuts just fine. 🙂

October 26, 2020 at 6:57 pm (3 years ago)Thanks for the resolution to the Mary Poppins problem (or perceived problem)! I appreciate your quick response and your great designs!

July 9, 2021 at 5:54 pm (2 years ago)Have downloaded Mary Poppins Lantern numerous times. Each time, it looks fine in my files, but when it goes to Cricut Explore Air2, the area of Mary’s head is blacked out. Any idea what’s happening?
Mandee
July 12, 2021 at 12:19 pm (2 years ago)Hi Brenda! I don’t know why it does this. It’s the only file that has this issue. But, if you send it to cut, it comes out looking like it should. 🙂
