Watermelon Pinwheels – Summer Cut Files

Who’s ready for a juicy new cut file craft? In preparation for all those awesome, outdoor get togethers you’ve got planned, I thought it would be fun to make a die cut design based on everyone’s favorite {healthy} summer treat—watermelons! Make your own adorable watermelon pinwheels for summer birthday parties, 4th of July, or just as a fun summer craft.

I have been wanting to do a pinwheel craft for a while now, and figured that around 4th of July would be a great time to make it happen. I had planned to do these with star cut-outs and, of course, the classic red, white, and blue paper. But, as I was thinking about celebrating Independence Day with my family, my mind kept going back to the yummy food (I may or may not have been hungry at the time); and that led me to craving some delicious watermelon!

Once I had the idea for a watermelon-themed pinwheel design, it just stuck.

How to Make

1. Use your cutting machine or X-ACTO knife, along with my template, to cut out your pinwheel shapes.

2. Glue your pink and green sheet of paper together, making sure to line up the interior cut marks. Then draw some watermelon seeds on the pink side.

3. Fold your flaps inward: parallel with the cut marks. Be sure that the tip extends slightly past the center.

Optional: Use a bone folder to create nice, sharp creases in your pinwheel.

4. Use a pushpin to attach the pinwheel flaps together and to the eraser of the pencil. If your pin extends beyond the eraser, use wire cutters to trim off the sharp end.

And that’s it! These pinwheels are super simple to make—especially if you have a cutting machine on hand. They are adorable, and sure to be a hit at any summer celebration!
