As part of the “Thomas Family Summer-Fun” schedule, my husband and I recently took the kids to a butterfly atrium, and it was a blast! I couldn’t believe all of the different species of butterflies we were able to see. Davian adored looking at the butterflies through his magnifying glass and trying to get them to hop onto his finger.

There was also a play area where kids could wear butterfly wings, and I was surprised to find that Davian even got into that!

Elliott enjoyed the butterflies from a distance, and was content to have my husband hold him for the duration of the experience (i.e. he was kind of scared of the butterflies and would cry every time Isaac tried to put him down—sacrificing him to the barrage of beautiful, flying insects).

Seeing all those exquisite creatures inspired me to make some fun, die cut butterflies of my own.

I think these turned out really lovely! I used cardstock and vellum as my materials for this craft, but you could make these butterflies our of vinyl or any other kind of paper that you like as well.

I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my designs, and a Cricut Maker to bring my creations to life. For tips on creating fun paper cuts like this one, see the FAQ section on my website. Also, be sure to check out the other awesome fun freebies available on my blog!

Enjoy making these die cut butterflies! What plans do you have for these enchanting insects?

Thank you for these beautiful butterflies! I was wondering if you could tell me what setting you used on your cricut for the vellum?

Good question Colleen! Vellum can be kind of a tricky material—especially with fine details like these. I used the “Vellum” setting on my Cricut Maker, but set the pressure to “Light” instead of default, and that worked really well. I also had to use a really fresh cutting mat, because it was slipping on one of my older ones.

      Hope that helps! 🙂
