Up Paper Lantern

Adventure is out there: a fun mantra from an adorable movie. I’m stoked to be sharing my latest design in my Disney Paper Lanterns series today! The film Up is known for it’s sense of fun, unlikely friendships, and, of course, for making everybody cry from a 4-minute sequence that doesn’t even have any lines involved. So, I did my best to capture at least a portion of those feelings in this cute Up paper lantern design!

It’s been a little while since I’ve added to my paper lantern collection, but I always have a good time designing these intricate little pieces. I’ve even installed some fun shelves in my office to display my growing collection!

Up Paper Lantern

As a central figure to the story, I really wanted to capture all the quirky details in the Up house, and that is definitely the part that I spent the most time with (as you can probably tell)! Overall, I am just thrilled with how it turned out.

But, of course, this design wouldn’t be complete without Carl, Russell, and Dug the dog!

To learn how to assemble my paper lanterns, see this tutorial.

I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my designs, and a Cricut Maker to bring my creations to life. For tips on creating fun paper cuts like this one, see the FAQ section on my website.

Like most all my paper lanterns, removing the final design from your cutting mat is as much of an art as the cut itself, so be sure to go slowly—especially around the details of the house.

Enjoy making this adorable Up paper lantern! Who do you know that would love this paper craft?

The timing of this post is both amazing AND terrible! We are hosting an Up themed baby shower this weekend for my daughter and son-in-law. I already made your carousel as a decoration for it (subbing in Kevin for the horses!). Now I can’t NOT make at least one of these. I hope I can find the time. I’ve never done one before.
Thank you for sharing your talent. 🙂

Nice! Love it when I post something that goes right along with someone’s plans!

Oh my goodness, I definitely need to see this unique version of my carousel that you’ve made (if you are willing to, email me a pic at mandee@designsbymissmandee.com)!! And if you can make my carousel, you can certainly put one of these together—they’re pretty simple. 🙂

Sorry for not replying sooner!!! It has been a week since the shower and the carousel and lantern are still out on display. My daughter would like the lantern, she just had no way to get it home safely.
If anyone is wondering, waxed paper works to line them. As this was made on a whim, I had to use what I had on hand. I could NOT get parchment paper to work. It refused to stick to my mat!

        I’ll send that photo now…

I like your display of your Disney lanterns. I may borrow your idea but I am having a problem with the lanterns I made. The tops are starting to curl and the boxes are losing their shapes getting distorted. Do you use a special glue for the vellum to prevent warping?

Thank you! I’m glad you like my display—seeing my lanterns lined up like that makes me very happy. 😊

I just use good old fashioned hot glue when I make them. I just put a dab on each section (avoiding where the fold will be), and I’ve been able to avoid warping that way. Hope that helps!

Is it okay to substitute wax paper for vellum??

Definitely! I’ve even had people use tissue paper to line some of my crafts, and that works too. Vellum tends to be sturdier, but I understand that it’s not something everyone has on hand. 🙂

Hello, thank you very much for this lantern, it is beautiful as all others.
I’d love a Jungle Book one and a Cars one
And many Starwars ^-^ one for each movie or by theme : Empire characters, Rebellion characters, droids …
    And Harry Potter’s too
I think you’ve guessed i do LOVE your lanterns, I’ve at least succeeded to gather materials to make some, as i don’t have a cut machine,i’ll try by hand hoping this will do.
