I’ve shared other butterfly designs in the past, but never anything on this scale! I thought it would be fun to make these as large as possible in order to add tons of detail to the wings.

As I was sketching out my designs, I planned on sticking to more traditional butterfly wing patterns. But, as my heart was yearning for spring (after shoveling yet another foot of snow from my driveway), I decided to incorporate some floral elements into two of the designs. Overall, I really love how they turned out—both the floral butterflies and the more traditional design!

I have made my fair share of balloon arches for birthday parties (never do something once for your kids that you’re not willing to do 3,000 times), and one of my favorite balloon arches I’ve ever done incorporated metallic gold butterflies. So, I was thinking about how much more amazing it could have been if I had included a few larger-than-life butterflies in the mix! And that’s where the initial idea for these beauties was born.

I use Adobe Illustrator for all of my designs, and a Cricut Maker to bring my creations to life. For tips on creating fun paper cuts like this one, see the FAQ section on my website. Also, be sure to check out the other fun freebies available on my blog!

Enjoy putting these lovely extra-large butterflies together. And don’t forget to share your amazing finished projects with me on Instagram!

Beutiful big butterflies! I suggest the next ones include a monarch and a luna moth, they are pretty too! I don’t like swarms of tent moths that we get in the spring, but the lunas can be beautiful in paper.

I do love moths too! Anytime I suggest a moth project to my followers I tend to get some pushback (I guess a fair amount of people are scared of moths). But I would definitely like to do more!
